The UK Red Special meetup took place once again in Reading, England in October. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the iconic Red Special guitar built by Sir Brian May and his father Harold. Much to everyone's surprise, we had an unannounced special guest.
Sir Brian May dropped in just after lunch. He was visibly awed by the sight of about 100 fans of his guitar, and the dozens of replicas on display around the room. Sir Brian spoke at length about his guitar, took questions, and spent most of the afternoon with us, living up to his reputation as being a kind and generous man.
Accompanying Sir Brian was, of course, his guitar. Steve Prior, who is currently the "travelling custodian" of the Red Special stayed after Sir Brian took his leave, and kindly allowed everyone to hold and play the guitar.

Steve held my replica while I played the original, and gave me some tips on fret dressing. It was only later that I learned that he had just finished a tour as guitar tech for David Gilmour.

This year the Red Special builders and enthusiasts from all around the world raised a whopping £3,000 for Sir Brian May's Save Me Trust and Prostate Cancer UK.
